We’re in the Army now!

Craig and I got to chaperon a 5th grade overnight field trip to Angel Island for a living history reenactment with John. Boy did we have fun!

We spent a day in the life of a civil war soldier stationed at Camp Reynolds in 1864. Kids made their own vittles (and cleaned all the dishes), learned how to navigate by compass and how to send and read Morse code signals. Did I mention we slept in bed rolls on a wooden pallet and had to wake up during the night for 90 minute watch duty? That too.

It was my first time to Angel Island. I found a lotta love there.

Looking forward to going next year with Joe!

Breakfast

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I don’t get up early enough to enjoy a good one at home so I decided to make and freeze a bunch of stuff that I could take to work and reheat.

Burritos Breakfast Burritos

Breakfast Burritos were tasty. I filled these with different combinations of sausage, bacon, green onions and cheese.

Egg Muffins

So were the Egg Muffins with bacon or sausage and cheese. Baked the eggs in a muffin tin and they came out just the right size for the English muffin.

Unfortunately, I’ve run out. Oh dear, guess I’ll have to head on over to Pinterest to find some more breakfast in a muffin tin recipes, what a shame!

Saturday mornings in the kitchen

Life has gotten in my way lately and I haven’t had a Saturday morning cooking session in quite a while. It was good to get back in the swing of things today.

I started off with french toast, using up the (more than) day old bread that my honey brought home from the restaurant. Since we were out of syrup I had to get busy.

Here we have chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, and pear:

Syrups

Best part of the double batch of chocolate syrup is you have to make chocolate milk with the leftovers that won’t fit in the bottle. And maybe little Joe will use the pear on his toast/cakes/waffles, but no one else will so I had to make some yogurt to go with that.

Next we’re off to my sister’s birthday party where her hubby will impress us with pulled pork sandwiches. He’s been smoking and slow cooking the pork for days. We are all encouraging him to follow his dream of cooking school; I promise to taste test anything and everything! And then tomorrow night it’s off to my man’s brother’s house where his wife will make my cherished birthday dinner. Same thing every year–no deviation–catfish in red sauce with green beans amandine. Ahhhhhh.

What a food lovers delight this weekend is turning out to be.

It’s here!

This time of year in Sonoma County is often referred to as the “Crush.” Little Joe helped me squeeze my first batch of concord grape juice. He lasted a little over a minute and said his purple hand came clean. When I showed him mine…

Grape Stained Hand

…he said I just needed to use soap, his came right off. Hmmm, maybe he didn’t crush long enough cause mine’s not coming off.

Got an entire bucket of grapes off one vine, only from the bottom vines.

photo (3)Wasn’t sweet enough to drink straight, gonna have to cut and sweeten it I think.

Summer fruit

I finally made it to the Farmer’s Market on lunch the other day. Arrived 30 minutes before the close of market and got all the deals I was hoping for. It was sad to see that most of my favorite summer fruits for making jam are almost gone for the season. Perhaps I’ll try again next week and see if I can preserve some of that summer goodness.

Meantime I’m thinking of making some ketchup before these beauties are through.
